The Maiden Inter-House Sports Competition of Sifon Nursery / Primary School, Abak will take place today Tuesday, 30th March, 2010 at the school sportground at 10am.
A total of six houses will be competing in the sports Meet. The houses are White Barr. Ibokette, Red Hon. Udonsek, Blue Elder Eto-Abasi, Green Sir Asuka, Purple Mrs. Ikpat and Yellow Barr. Essein Okon.
A statement by the Headmistress of the School, Deaconess Mrs. R. J. Ekpenyong indicates that the Inter-House Sports Competition will be chaired by Dr. Emmanuel Ibanga while the Manager Union Bank Abak, Mrs. Enobong Udowo and the Supervisor for Education, Youth and Sports in Abak local government area, Mr. Godwin Norbert Okon are to serve as the Special Guest of Honour.
The statement added that other eminent personalities within and outside Abak local government area are expected.
Events to be competed for according to the statement include football, handball, Basketball, Volleyball, discuss, shot put, javelin, high jump, lung jump, 50m, 100m, 200m other track and field events, sack race, fashion parade, quiz etc.
At the end of the sports meet, trophies, certificates and other prizes will be given to the winning houses.
Speaking with our reporter at Abak, Mr. David Paul, a French Teacher in the school and one of the organizers of the Inter-House Sports said the competition will afford the pupil the opportunity to embrace sports as according to him, some of them may become future national and international stars.

In a state where leaders believe so much in tribal politics, where ethnocentric bigotry holds sway, where millions of people are made to live in fear, where tension looms, where Machiavellianism is in vogue, where disunity is the order of the day yet the people outside the shores of the state are made to believe that there is unity here. In fact, in a state where smaller component(s) is/are marginalized, victimized and their rights trampled upon, a citizen like me with the Marxist's heart and thinking has nothing else to do in his leisure than to listen to, not just any music, but, reggae music. And not just to any how reggae music, but to those of Bob Marley, Lucky Dube, Peter Tosh, Eric Donaldson (peace on their ashes), and Mandators, Maxwell Udoh, Andy Shurman, Orit Wilki and Peterside.
I was listening to Redemption Song by Bob Marley when my phone rang. I ignored it because of the wordings of the song which I hold in a very high esteem. “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery/ none but ourselves can free our minds/ I've got no fear for atomic energies 'cause none of them can stop the time….”
The phone rang again and I picked after lowering the volume of my radio set. Behold a man from Oron Local Government Area whom I have not known called me.
“Am I on to Thomas squared?” he asked
“Yes you are right,” I responded.
“Well, you do not know me, but I am an ardent reader of your column right from when you were writing for the Community Pulse…”
“I see!”
“Please, I want to ask if you have heard the arrest and subsequent arraignment of Comrade Ononokpono? Please I want you to comment on that, please because it is a slap on the Oro nation. How can a man be arrested for asking questions and proffering advice to his fellow man? Is it because Ononokpono is in the minority?”
The man spent about ten minutes talking the minds of all true born Oronians. Towards the end of his conversation, I raised the volume of my radio set and the music continued; “How long shall they kill our prophets while we stand aside and look? Some say it just a part of it; we got to fulfill the book: won't you help to sing? The song of freedom; the song that I ever have, redemption song”
“Ah! That music in the background is sweet,” the man said.
“It does not only sweet but suits the situation on ground. Don't you know that Chief Ononokpono is a prophet who before now had prophesied what would happen if ……well, good buy?”
I switched off my radio set because of furiousity. But come to think of it what was this Ononokpono wrote that should irk the governor? Was he not writing/repeating what others like Obong Victor Attah, Sen. Udoedehe etc. have been saying? Is he arrested because he is from the minority? Is he arraigned because he published his in a national tabloid of no less reputation- the Nation? Was he not asking questions bordering on the security situation and the management of fun

Akpabio Continuity Cup Kicks Off April, 11
An Easter Footbal Challenge tagged “Akpabio Continuity Cup will kick off in the state on April 11, 2010.
The tournament which will be in under-18 boys category is sponsored by the National Council of Annang Youths and will be organized by the state chapter of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON).
Already, more than 20 youth teams across the state have indicated their willingness to storm the state capital for the tournament.
According to the organizers, all the matches will take place at Comprehensive Secondary School, Four Towns, Uyo.
Speaking with our reporter in Uyo, the President National Council of Annang youths, Dr. Emmanuel Udosen said the aim of the competition is to bring the youths of the state together to drum support for Chief Godswill Akpabio's second term bid.
Apart from engaging the youths positively, Dr. Udosen described football as a unifying factor the world over which has also put food on the tables of many people.
The National President who also doubles as the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee stated that the youths are happy with the performance of Chief (Dr) Godswill Akpabio and will do everything within their power to return the Governor back to the Hilltop Mansion in 2011.

Commissioner Samuel Effanga Is Really Out Of Touch
Top government officials in Akpabio's administration, such as Commissioner Samuel Efanga of Ministry of Science and Technology, is really out of touch with the mood of poor masses in Akwa Ibom State, if they think that the people of Akwa Ibom are waiting for another four years of a cultist-infested government.
Just listen to Commissioner Samuel Efanga: “In Uyo here, if you take a roll-call of political stakeholders, you will discover that the overwhelming majority are on the side of Gov. Akpabio”.
Commissioner Efanga is right, because in his small mind, he really believes that word “Uyo” means the crumb-from-the-table-eaters, and all the cultists in Akpabio's administration that hang around him all day and all night at the Secretariat. And before I move on, let me ask Commissioner Samuel Efanga; when did he take the roll-call in Uyo to know the overwhelming majority of the people are on the side of governor Akpabio?

Who is really Samuel Efanga? Before Samuel Efanga became a Commissioner, he was just a junior level (8) civil servant in the services of Akwa IBom State Government. When opportunity came up to contest for Ward 6 Councilorship position in Uyo LGA, Samuel Efanga became a candidate, but was rejected by his own people; he lost the election, woefully. Samuel Efanga had no choice but to remain in his level 8 position in government.
There was a story about expatriates that were kidnapped in Akwa Ibom State. A ransom money was paid, but what the kidnappers did not know at the time was that the currencies used in paying the ransom were marked by the agents of State Security Services (SSS). When someone showed up at the bank to deposit the money, (the bank) employees, who were already placed on notice saw the marked money and contacted authorities. To the amazement of the investigators, the person who went to the bank to make the deposit turned out to be the wife of Dr. Chris Ekong, the same Dr. Chris Ekong, who is now in custody for all sorts of allegations.
When Governor Akpabio reshuffled his cabinet, Dr. Chris Ekong was dropped as the Commissioner for Economic Development. Since Dr. Chris Ekong was from Akpan Udoedehe's Local Government Area, Akpabio's administration contacted Akpanudoedehe, who was then a Federal Minister, asking him to recommend a person from his LGA for the administration to replace Chris Ekong. That is how Samuel Efanga became a Commissioner in Akpabio's administration.
When Akpabio reshuffled his cabinet again, Samuel Efanga's name was deleted from the list of Commissioners that Akpabio wanted to retain in his government. But in order to retain his position, Samuel Efanga was offered a deal he could not afford to reject, join the cult or lose your position, as a commissioner, in government.
Reliable sources have confided in me that there was in-fighting among Akpabio's Personal Assistants to recruit Samuel Efanga into cultist group. In the end, Samuel Efanga registered and became a member of the KKK. When the list of some cultists in Akwa Ibom State Government was published, I was informed that the names of several cultists were not included. NCGF Annual General Meeting Ends
This year's annual general meeting of the Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship (NCGF) with the theme: “I have set before you an open Door” has ended in Ikot Ekpene with a call on the Christian believers to always make their requests known to God through prayer. The event which took place at the Conference Hall of Tropical Guest House, Ikot Ekpene had both members and non-members of the fellowship in attendance.
In his address, the Zonal Chairman of the Nigerian Christian Graduate Fellowship, Dr. Samuel Itina said that the NCGF is a non- profit making Christian, non-governmental organization (NGO) which was inaugurated as Nigerian fellowship in 1975 with the coming together of already existing city graduate fellowship, saying that NCGF is neither elitist nor does it segregate as some may be tempted to think, and enjoined the people that membership from all denominations to join the fellowship.
Dr Itina said that the uniqueness of the fellowship is in her membership composition and vision which include learning and training at postsecondary level to execute the unique vision God has bestowed on his children.
The speaker who harped on the prevailing insecurity in the country said that places of worship are no longer respected or hallowed as kidnappers and armed robbers visit the churches to wreak their havoc, adding that the Jos pogrom has introduced a different dimension to the insecurity in the country, which according to him has raised a lot of questions such as is there a planned jihad against Christians? Can we trust the Nation's security forces to defend us? And sympathized with the Christian folk in Jos who lost their dear ones and property and prayed that they remain strong in the faith, leaving vengeance to God, who he said at the right and appropriate time will judge every action of every man on earth irrespective of the person's religion.

Ononokpono's Arrest Provocative, Overkill - Says Liberty Network
Foremost faith-based and pro-democracy NGO in Akwa Ibom State has described the arrest and prosecution of the 75-year old elder statesman, Hon. Effiong Ononokpono as kangaroo and provocative. In a press statement demanding the 'immediate step back' of Governor Godswill Akpabio from the case, the group advised the governor to develop a thick skin ahead of the forth-coming elections because 'there are a million Ononokponos in Akwa Ibom State waiting for Akpabio to give accurate account of his stewardship'.
"We condemn in its entirety the Gestapo arrest and kangaroo prosecution of a respected elder statesman of the calibre of Hon. Effiong Ononokpono, for simply exercising his right to ask the governor some questions that obviously perturbed him as a senior citizen of Akwa Ibom State . We note that these were simple questions that even a journalist would have asked the governor; which required simple or even humorous answers. We are disturbed that, instead of towing a decent path of giving and publishing his answers to Ononokpono's questions, he opted to mobilize the coercive apparatus of State against a sick and frail elder statesman who has contributed enormously to the economic and socio-political fortunes of both Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. This is heavy-handed and certainly an overkill", the NGO said.
The group also expressed concern about what it called "the incredible level of intolerance that is increasingly manifesting in political and government circles in the State and called on the governor to "develop a thick skin ahead of the 2011 elections because there are a million Ononokponos in Akwa Ibom State waiting for the governor to give some account of his stewardship"..
Liberty Network recalled that this is not the first time that Governor Akpabio would drag his critics into detention, citing the case of a local journalist and son of a pastor in Uyo; as well as the rampant confiscation of newspapers and harassment of vendors in the State. The integrity group noted with displeasure the atmosphere of tension and insecurity in the State and said that even during the military rule; Akwa Ibom people were never so afraid to air their views, even in private, as it is now. "It is patently wrong, oppressive and inadvisable for the governor to seek to silent every dissenting voice by all means, even in a situation where all the state media establishment and beyond are blaring non-stop for him and against his perceived opponents".
Said the Liberty Network: "We have noted that even while Ononokpono was being hounded into prison custody and up to this point, the supporters of the governor are daily running a three-page expensive and potentially libellous advertorial against former Governor Attah, Senator Udoedehe and Sam Ewang in virtually all the national and local newspapers. We therefore call on Governor Akpabio to retrace his steps immediately, facilitate the release of Ononokpono and promote a conducive atmosphere for democratic norms and ethos. Akwa Ibom government must be reminded here and at all times that opposition is a perfectly legitimate and acceptable institution that must blossom in order for democracy to take root and grow".

RASVON To Train Safety Workers
Rescue and Safety Volunteers of Nigeria International (RASVON), a non-governmental, non- religious, and non-political organization, aimed at safe-guarding lives and rescuing accident victims in Nigeria, is set to organize a five day training workshop and seminar for all rescue/safety volunteer workers in the state. The meeting is to have as its theme: “Preparing Rescue Officers for Responsible and Responsive Leadership for Sustainable Millennium Developments.”
Speaking with Global Concord in his 51 Nepa Line Office, the National Coordination of RASVON, Pastor Josiah Adams said the programme which is slated to take place at the Ikono Ibom Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikot Ayan Ikono, Uyo Local Government Area from Wednesday 7th Sunday 12th April, 2010, is a mandatory course for all Rescue Volunteer workers in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at Large.
According to a release signed by the National Coordinator, Pastor Josiah Adams, and made available to Global Concord, the aims of the programme include among other things: “ to create a conducive environment and atmosphere that will enhance the development of positive values, courage, trust and integrity which are the hallmarks of acceptable citizenship and leadership service; to encourage participants to co-operate with others to give service to and accept responsibility for others”.

Youths Advised To Embrace Education
Youths have been advised to take advantage of the free and compulsory education of the state government to embrace education.
The advised was handed down by the Supervisor for Education, Youth and Sports in Abak local government area, Mr. Godwin Norbert Okon during a thanksgiving and birthday party of the President of National Council of Annang Youths, Dr. Emmanuel Udosen.
Mr. Godwin Okon noted that the only way the youths could become useful and responsible citizens in future is to embrace education.
While congratulating Dr. Emmanuel Udosen on his birthday and successful completion of his PH.D programme, Mr. Godwin Okon called on the youths to emulate Dr. Udosen, pointing out that his zeal, courage and determination has made him to become what he is today.
Also speaking, the Director of Media and Publicity of National Council of Annang Youths, Comrade Ubong Umana expressed happiness with Dr. Emmanuel Udosen for his successfully completion of his PH.D programme and urged the youths to emulate his qualities.
Earlier, the president National Council of Annang Youths, Dr. Emmanuel Udosen thanked God for his successful completion of his PH.D programme and for adding one more year to his life.
Dr. Udosen also thanked his visitors for finding time to come and rejoice with him.
He expressed happiness that Chief Godswill Akpabio has made the people of Akwa Ibom State proud through his numerous life touching programmes.
The National Council of Annang Youths President noted that the free and compulsory education of the state government will afford the people of the state the opportunity to attain greater height in future, stressing that Akwa Ibom indigenes would in the nearest future compete favourably with their western counterparts.
The youth Leader re-stated the resolve of his organization to continue to drum support for Chief Godswill Akpabio's second term aspiration.
According to him, the people of Annang have resolved for the first time in their history to support and present Chief Godswill Akpabio as the sole candidate for the 2011 governorship election and solicited the support of youths and elders of other ethnic groups in the state.
He described the achievements of Governor Akpabio so far as unprecedented in the 22 year history of the state.
The occasion was attended by cream of personalities across the state who all danced and rejoiced with the celebrant.

Groups Root For IBB
The 2011 presidential aspiration of Gen Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd) has received the nod of groups and individuals in Akwa Ibom State. Global Concord gathered at the weekend that letters of solidarity from groups in the state have since been dispatched to the Army General assuring him of the support of Akwa Ibom People to his aspiration.

The letter which was signed by the group's president, Obong Asuquo Etuk, Vice President Mr. Savior Etekpa and Secretary Comrade Nsikak Thompson expressed confidence on the ability of the ex-president to improve on the living standard of the people of Nigeria who have long yearned for a man who can lead the country purposefully.
While expressing sadness over the demise of the erstwhile first lady and wife of the presidential hopeful, the group whose aim among other things is “to give a platform for political expression for the people of Akwa Ibom State”, urged all to rally support for the former president.
In a related development, a national network has been formed and inaugurated to co-ordinate political activities for the presidential aspiration of Gen Ibrahim Babangida. Known as Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Movement, IBB Movement, the group which has its chapters across the 36 states of the Federation including FCT is to garner grassroots supports to the presidential hopeful. In Akwa Ibom State the group which is co-coordinated by Mr. Ime Ekpenyong has started massive mobilization and sensitization of people to embrace the developmental philosophy of General Ibrahim Babangida.
In a chat with Global Concord at the weekend, Mr. Ekpenyong told the press that letters of introduction and invitation for participation and support have been dispatched to political office holders in the state to join the trend which according to him is driving towards overhauling the country's political scene to enhance the citizens participation in governance to reap massively there from.
Mr. Ime Ekpenyong a politician and business mogul said the group in Akwa Ibom will soon begin formation of wards and chapters executives “to ensure that the message and dream of making IBB the next president is rooted at the grassroots”. Concerning his reason for such massive mobilization, he said; “the next coming election is going to be free and fair; it is only one who is accepted and loved by the people that will carry the day. IBB has lofty programmes to unfold to Nigerians and only needs the support of the masses and here in Akwa Ibom, the movement has begun massive sensitization to ensure that the people embraced him and his programmes. We are sure of his success here because so far frontline politicians have started to cue in and more will soon join” he said.
The advised was handed down by the Supervisor for Education, Youth and Sports in Abak local government area, Mr. Godwin Norbert Okon during a thanksgiving and birthday party of the President of National Council of Annang Youths, Dr. Emmanuel Udosen.
Mr. Godwin Okon noted that the only way the youths could become useful and responsible citizens in future is to embrace education.
While congratulating Dr. Emmanuel Udosen on his birthday and successful completion of his PH.D programme, Mr. Godwin Okon called on the youths to emulate Dr. Udosen, pointing out that his zeal, courage and determination has made him to become what he is today.
Also speaking, the Director of Media and Publicity of National Council of Annang Youths, Comrade Ubong Umana expressed happiness with Dr. Emmanuel Udosen for his successfully completion of his PH.D programme and urged the youths to emulate his qualities.
Earlier, the president National Council of Annang Youths, Dr. Emmanuel Udosen thanked God for his successful completion of his PH.D programme and for adding one more year to his life.
Dr. Udosen also thanked his visitors for finding time to come and rejoice with him.
He expressed happiness that Chief Godswill Akpabio has made the people of Akwa Ibom State proud through his numerous life touching programmes.
The National Council of Annang Youths President noted that the free and compulsory education of the state government will afford the people of the state the opportunity to attain greater height in future, stressing that Akwa Ibom indigenes would in the nearest future compete favourably with their western counterparts.
The youth Leader re-stated the resolve of his organization to continue to drum support for Chief Godswill Akpabio's second term aspiration.
According to him, the people of Annang have resolved for the first time in their history to support and present Chief Godswill Akpabio as the sole candidate for the 2011 governorship election and solicited the support of youths and elders of other ethnic groups in the state.
He described the achievements of Governor Akpabio so far as unprecedented in the 22 year history of the state.
The occasion was attended by cream of personalities across the state who all danced and rejoiced with the celebrant.

Zoning Battle: PDP Meeting Ends In Fiasco
first in-house deliberation for or against the adoption of zoning of House of Assembly seat in Ibesikpo Asutan recently, an enlarged ward and chapter executive meeting of PDP in Ibesikpo Asutan ended in disarray.
The meeting, convened by the Chapter Chairman of Ibesikpo Asutan, Apostle Ekpo James had in attendance all the chapter and ward officers of the party. The business of the day started with relative decorum until the chapter chairman brought the issue of zoning which he presented to the state executive of PDP during their visit to Ibesikpo Asutan for deliberation and possible adoption. The venue became rowdy as members ran out of patience raining abusive words on the chapter chairman. The executive told the chairman that they cannot adopt a personal speech made without their knowledge as a political stance of the local government and warned him not to constitute himself as a hindrance to the wish of the electorates by imposing what they termed: “a self-serving formula of zoning to sent your godson to represent us”. Some of the participants accused the chapter chairman of sundry charges and failure to ensure proper consultation with party executive before decisions are taken. One of the ward chairmen from Asutan, Mr. Iniobong Lyons who claimed to speak on behalf of other ward chairmen, argued that there has never been zoning of Assembly seat in Asutan Ekpe and maintained that if zoning was to be introduced, the chapter chairman and his co-hort from Ibesikpo clan should have duely consulted the stakeholders and elders of Asutan Ekpe before coming out with the position of the party on the matter. The speaker alleged connivance of some power brokers in the area to impose a surrogate on the constituency.
The chapter chairman who is from Ibesikpo clan is said to have subscribed to installing a certain aspirant allegedly anointed by the state party chairman to secure a ticket for himself in his chairmanship aspiration. But unfolding developments and resistance in the constituency has proven beyond reasonable doubt that the dream may not materialize as political elders in the council have set high standard of discipline in education, experience, political maturity and generosity as qualification for the contentious seat. Speaking recently with the press in Ibesikpo Asutan, an elder statesman and politician, Obong Donatus Noah said the house of Assembly seat of Ibesikpo Asutan state constituency will not be subjected to political manipulations as has been the case thereby rubbing the electorates effective representation. Obong Noah who is Ibereden Ekpe of Asutan Ekpe said the political antecedent and contributions to the development of Asutan Ekpe as a whole by the contenders will be evaluated to make sure dividends of democracy is brought to the local government. While appreciating the developmental strides of Governor Godswill Akpabio and the council chairman, Barr Chris Essien, the speaker who is former vice chairman of Ekpe Atai cautioned against engaging in antics that may scare away credible candidate to the house seat. PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY SENATOR J. J. AKPANUDOEDEHE ON THE ARREST AND PERSECUTION OF COMRADE (HON.) EFFIONG ONONOKPONO BY AKWA IBOM STATE GOVERNMENT
On Thursday, March 25th 2010 on page 11 of the Nation Newspaper, a Distinguished and Honorable Statesman, Comrade (Hon) Effiong Ononokpono published (15) fifteen questions for the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio to answer. Still in that publication, this veteran of decent and open politics of the good days of yore offered His Excellency the Governor of Akwa Ibom State 5(five) pieces of advice.
On that same Thursday March 25th 2010, in his reaction to the publication, His Excellency the governor, in a remarkable show of paranoia and intolerance that has characterized his administration, sent a team of armed policemen to Odobo-Okobo, the home of Comrade Ononokpono to arrest and take the old man to the State Police Headquarters, Uyo where he was detained in the police cell after an intense and punitive interrogation. Later that same day, the old man was removed from the cell and taken to his home stead in Odobo-Okobo where his private residence was turned upside down in the name of conducting a search. The police had no search warrant. On Friday the 26th of March, 2010, Comrade Ononokpono was arraigned in the Uyo Chief Magistrate's Court No.1 presided over by Chief Magistrate Edet Obot on a two count charge of criminal defamation and causing alarm to the public. These two offences are misdemeanors and are bail able offences. Despite the presumption of innocence of the accused in law and the obvious deteriorating health of Comrade Ononokpono, an old man of 75 years of age, and despite the passionate plea of learned defense counsel for the bail of the accused, the learned Chief Magistrate Edet Obot ordered the old man with a life-threatening medical condition to be remanded in prison custody in the Federal Prison, Uyo and adjourned the case to the 14th of May, 2010.
Now, Comrade Ononokpono is in prison custody for daring to ask the questions which every citizen of Akwa Ibom State is entitled to ask of his or her governor and government. Comrade Ononokpono is in prison for offering 5 pieces of advice to His Excellency the governor on the path to peace and good governance in Akwa Ibom State. The basic principles of democracy contain intrinsically the right of the citizens to open and accountable government and the right to ask questions of his or her leaders. Regrettably, in Akwa Ibom State, a Gestapo style of governance, brooking no opposition or dissenting view is fast emerging with the leadership of Governor Akpabio. When His Excellency, Arch (Obong) Victor Attah was the governor of Akwa Ibom State, some well known and respected citizens of the state persistently expressed their views and opinions in national and local newspapers and magazines against the government in power at that time. There was no arrest or detention of these individuals and they went about their private and official endeavors in and out of Akwa Ibom State freely. Now there is palpable fear and depression in our dear state created by the blinding intolerance and desperate desire of one man, Governor Godswill Akpabio to continue in office beyond 2011.
Akwa Ibom State and its people now live in constant fear of kidnappers and general insecurity.
Comrade Ononokpono is a sick old man. I pray that nothing happens to him in incarceration. Above all I pray for Akwa Ibom State and the people of Akwa Ibom state that God in His infinite mercies will deliver us from the hands of the destructive tyranny that has risen up like a monster in our dear state.
