Akpabio Launches Education Foundation For Atting/Emenyi

Governor Godswill Akpabio has immortalized late PDP chairmen, Chiefs Joe Atting and Tony Emenyi with the donation of N10m for the establishment of Tony Emeyi and Joe Atting's Educational Foundation. The state governor who announced the donation last week Friday at Oron during the funeral service of Chief Tony Emenyi for the educational well being of the families of the late politicians said the establishment of the foundation was in view of the duo's hard work and numerous contributions for the sustenance of democracy and growth of the PDP in the state. As seasoned state chairmen of PDP in Akwa Ibom, Governor Akapbio maintained that transparency was brought to bear during their different tenures as was reflected in their refusal to take bribes, describing them as loyal party men whose presence will be highly missed by the PDP.

The governor told the crowd of sympathizers that the donation was equally ordered by the cordiality that existed between him and Chief Emenyi. He said: “if you look at the burial programme, you will see where I was shown in more than one place. We had a fantastic relationship not even as a governor and that is why I must ask that when God gives you opportunity to be governor or in any position of authority, even as a local government chairman, please recognize the people who sacrifice to get you there. If the first chairman of PDP, Chief Joe Atting was to die during the tenure of Godswill Akpabio like Chief Tony Emenyi, he would have had a state burial”, he hinted.

He regretted that many people in the State have criticized him and his government for the declaration of Chief Tony Emeyi's burial a state burial, adding however that he is 'not deterred by such criticisms as can be seen in my continuous zeal for improvement in Akwa Ibom State”.

Earlier in his address, the national chairman of the party, Prince Vincent Obulafor said that the party was deeply touched by the news of the death of the former Chairman of the party, Chief Tony Emenyi. The National Chairman who was represented by the National Organizing Secretary of the party, Mr. Uche described Chef Emenyi as a strong party faithful who helped to held PDP together in the state, and thanked the state government and Methodist Church, Nigeria for giving the late party leader a befitting burial, adding that the array of personalities at the funeral should be a lesson to others to leave a worthy life.

Late Chief Tony Emenyi died in January 2010 at the age of 71 years.
