Manchester United Shoot Back To Top Of Premiership Table

As Aiyegbeni Misses Penalty In Everton Win
Paul Scholes' 100th league goal saw Manchester United move to the top of the English Premiership thanks to a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday evening.
Playing without the injured Wayne Rooney, United looked a shadow of their usual selves and needed their veteran midfielder to capitalise on a defensive error by Wolves and punish the midlands club with his milestone goal that proved enough to win the game.
The Red Devils are two points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table, though the Blues now have a game in hand after missing out on league action this weekend due to their commitments in the FA Cup.
Arsenal moved level on points with Chelsea but remained in third place after a 3-1 win over Burnley. Goals from Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Andre Arshavin handed the three points to the Gunners and kept them well and truly in contention for the title, though they too have a played game more than the Blues.
Bolton Wanderers scored an important 2-1 victory over West Ham United that moves the Trotters up to 13th and gives them some breathing room (a five-point gap) away from the relegation zone. The Hammers, in contrast, drop down a place to 14th and are just three points above the danger zone.
Africans Yakubu Ayegbeni, Steven Pienaar and Victor Anichebe played important roles for Everton as they thumped Hull City 5-1 and moved up to eighth place on the log. The standout player for the Merseysiders was Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta, who netted two well-taken goals.
Liverpool could move into fourth this evening if they take all three points on offer in their away game against Wigan Athletic, while Portsmouth will be looking for a repeat of their FA Cup quarterfinal win over Birmingham City when they host the ninth-placed side for the second time in the space of four days tomorrow.
Further midweek games see Sunderland looking to arrest their slide toward the relegation zone when they host Bolton at the Stadium of Light, while Burnley will look to give their survival hopes a boost by picking up three points when Stoke City visit Turf Moor.
