Fresh Moves To Fire Ibom Power...

The quest to get the 685 megawatts Ibom Power Plant fired has received a major boost as the Akwa Ibom government has sealed an agreement for the supply of gas to the plant located at Ikot Abasi.

This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Septa Energy to lay gas pipeline from Uquo Ibeno to the plant at Ikot Abasi. The multi-million Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) run by Russian company, UC Rusal, is also expected to benefit from the gas deal.

Speaking in Uyo, the commissioner for environment and mineral resources, Eno Akpan, who underscored the importance of the MoU, said it would create understanding between the gas company and the host community, adding that it would also ensure sustainable development of the host communities.

According to him, the MoU is seen as an important move meant to minimise conflict and ensure that the host communities were not neglected while respect is given to the local content policy of the Federal Government.

He said the agreement would also protect investors in addition to guaranteeing the safety of the projects.
In his remarks, the community relations manager of the gas company, Ekpelegho Joseph, assured that the company would ensure sustainable community development in the area by reducing unemployment through the use of local contractors and the provision of basic social infrastructure.

He said the projects would be carried out under the company's social responsibility programmes
